This heat wave is unprecedented and as always Texas leads the way with week after week of 100+ temperatures. All this heat puts a lot of pressure on your HVAC system as it works harder than ever to cool your home. In addition, HVAC companies are overloaded with repair and replacement calls. So what can you do to help your AC system work better? Majestic AC gives you five ways to help your AC system keep you comfortable in this heatwave.
1. Replace your air conditioner filters regularly
With extended run times and people staying inside, your AC filter may need to be changed more frequently. Clogged air filters reduces air flow which means your AC has to work harder to maintain the temperature you have set. We recommend you check you filters monthly to see if they need to be replaced. Clean air filters also benefits your family by providing an allergen-free environment.
2. Clean the outside condenser unit
The condenser unit that works with your AC inside is located somewhere outside your home and has a large fan inside a metal box with vents. These vents protect the coils which are an integral part to cooling your home. Ensure that there is no debris around the condenser unit and that there is unrestricted air flow. You can also use a garden hose at low pressure and specialized cleaner to clean any clogged coils. Be very careful not to damage the delicate fins or coils. Ensure the power is turned off from the condenser unit prior to working on it. A disconnect box should be located near the condenser.
3. Make sure coolant lines are insulated
Refrigerant pipes run from the condenser to the evaporator. You may see them running into the home covered in insulation. Over time, this insulation can come off reducing efficiency. Contact Majestic AC to replace the foam insulation and check the rest of your HVAC system for efficiency.
4. Help your AC cool your home
We know this sounds funny, but there are things you can do to help your AC keep you and your family comfortable. This includes running ceiling fans to help with air circulation, keep blinds and curtains shut to keep the sun’s radiant heat out of your home and ensure that your outside doors and windows are properly sealed.
5. Schedule a AC maintenance and energy audit
The professionals at Majestic AC can come to your home and perform a comprehensive maintenance on your HVAC system as well as offer ways to help save on your electric bills with an informative energy audit.
